The wings of the building house residential units joined together by a central lobby and ground floor community gathering spaces. The units have an open design and bathrooms and kitchens are organized to facilitate “aging in place” with sufficient room for wheelchair access and features such as grab bars, removable base cabinetry, lever controlled faucets and door hardware throughout. An emergency call system serves each unit. The building also features a vehicular drop-off in front, to allow for convenient and safe passenger loading and unloading. All parking and walkways throughout the site are well-lit, visually open, and accessible to all residents and their guests. In addition, an array of services will be provided to residents of Aster Apartments specifically designed to assist seniors and the disabled to remain vital, engaged, and independent for a longer period of time. The services focus on both educational opportunities and opportunities for tenants to increase connectivity with the community at large. |

It was completed in January 2004 and was the first affordable housing development built in downtown Eugene in over 20 years. The overarching goal for the Aurora Building was sustainability. This goal was met by decreasing impact on good soils, using existing infrastructure, encouraging alternate modes of transportation, and being a model for energy efficiency. Aurora is located one block from the downtown Lane Community College (LCC) campus, the mass transit center, the new library, and numerous entertainment, employment, and cultural centers. The project provides 54 units of housing and consists of 11 studio, 35 one-bedroom, and 8 two-bedroom apartments, 14 of which are set aside for LCC students. The rents are affordable to persons at or below 50 and 60 percent of area median income. An on-site Resident Service Coordinator works with tenants to form a resident council, designs enriching activities, and assists residents in accessing a variety of services that will enhance their quality of life. Notable Features: This project includes a geothermal heating and cooling system. The Aurora Building has received numerous awards: OHCS's Excellence in Housing; AIA People's Choice, and Downtown Eugene Inc's "Excellence in Design." |

All units have a kitchen, dining room, and a living room. Handicap-equipped units have ADA approved showers, lowered light switches and appliances designed for wheelchair users. Multi-Purpose Room - A multi-purpose room is available for meetings, hobby/craft classes, and wellness and exercise programs. Regularly planned activities and social gatherings, guided by the interest of those who reside at Windsong Apartments will have full use of this room.
