Initially sponsored by The ARC of Augusta, Inc., funding was received through the Section 811 Program of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to construct a four bedroom group home to serve the mentally challenged. Supportive services for the residents are provided by DePaul Community Resources. The home opened in August 2001 and is governed by a Board of Directors. Fairfax Hall

Fifty-four elderly families now occupy the building, and the beautiful dining room is a backdrop for civic and social functions. Both the interior and exterior of the structure have been restored to their former glory to retain historic character. Fairfax Hall is a superb example of historic preservation melded with affordable housing--the ideal amalgam of multiple community objectives. Located on a hillside overlooking the City of Waynesboro, Fairfax Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Fairfax Hall was constructed in 1890 as the grand, Queen Anne-style Brandon Hotel, able to accommodate two hundred guests. In 1913 the historic structure was converted to the Brandon Institute, a small coeducational college. In 1920, its name and use changed again to Fairfax Hall, a finishing school for young women, which subsequently expanded to an accredited junior college before closing in 1975. Until 1993, the building had limited use as an academy for staff development with the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Corrections.
