Details: Nestled in historic Northeast community and along Reservoir Street, near Spotswood Elementary School, Franklin Heights provides affordable housing to families and individuals in our area. Franklin Heights 129 units include apartments, townhouses, and single-family homes, ranging in size from one to five bedrooms. Renovated in 2008/2009 to certified EarthCraft design, the property consists of 129 units connected to project-based voucher assistance. Eligible families and individuals generally contribute 30% of their adjusted monthly income towards the rent. Residents are able to enroll in a self-sufficiency program that provides support and resources towards education, work training, and related needs such as childcare and transportation. The units are located in a prime location, with easy access to local support services and amenities.

Details: Another affordable option for senior independent living is our rental living community of Heritage Haven. This 150-apartment community offers rental housing which VMRC manages in coordination with the federal department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for low-income individuals 62 years of age or older where rental amounts are based on household income. Comprising 36 percent of our independent living units, Heritage Haven follows VMRC founder George B. Showalter’s intention to take care of elders. The board of Virginia Mennonite Home opened Heritage Haven in 1981 as the second building on our campus. This affordable housing community appeals to individuals from various socioeconomic backgrounds. Residents in Heritage Haven develop close-knit relationships with each other. Social spaces include several activity rooms, a library, coffee shop and connecting link to the retirement community’s Main Street. There, residents have access to the Wellness Center, dining venues, a credit union and more. VMRC hosts rotating art exhibitions in the Park Gables Gallery, located on Main Street. With exhibiting space for nearly 100 pieces, the Gallery has elevated VMRC’s status as “an arts retirement community” in the area. The Gallery offers track lighting, pedestals for woodwork, sculptures, and 3D artforms. VMRC and the Park Gables Gallery are known for hosting the resident-led National Juried Art Exhibition each June.

The Lineweaver Apartments provide 61 units within a five-story building. As a Section 8 New Construction Project, the 61 units consisting of 47 efficiencies and 14 one-bedroom apartments, with tenants only paying 30% of their monthly income towards rent. Residents have access to an on-site property manager and Service Coordinators, who help address needs and connect residents to services. The Lineweaver Apartments are located within walking distance of a grocery store, a department store, public transportation terminal, and local support services.
