Details: Hancock Estates, located on Hancock Street in Tiverton RI, is a 50-unit development financed under the HUD Section 202 program. These apartments are one bedroom only with a limited number of wheelchair accessible units. Hancock Estates is a two-story building with units measuring approximately 540 square feet. Heat and hot water are included; residents will be responsible for paying for their electricity, however they will receive an allowance to help defray this expense. Phone service and cable TV will be the financial responsibility of the residents. Income eligibility is based on the total gross household income. At least one household member must be 62 years of age or older. We need copies of ID, Social Security Cards and Birth Certificates in order to accept the application. Applicants may be declined due to negative credit history, criminal history, or a negative landlord reference; applicants must provide at least 5 years of landlord history. Details: Newport Heights is a mixed-income development located on Aquidneck Island, where beautiful beaches reign and shorelines enchant. It is near the Newport Naval Base and just minutes away from the famed “Summer Cottages” built in the 19th century on Bellevue Avenue — The Breakers, The Elms, Chateau-sur-Mer, Marble House, and more. A diverse population has found a home in this completely reconstructed housing development, originally built in 1939 to temporarily house Navy personnel and now featuring pitched roofs, colorful wood clapboards and lovely plantings. In total, there are 49 market-rate apartments and 250 affordable apartments that have various layers of subsidy available to tenants. There are 54 one-bedroom, 110 two-bedroom, 103 three-bedroom, 22 four-bedroom and 10 five-bedroom apartments. There are washer/dryer hookups in the townhouses and there are laundry rooms in the mid-rise building. One dog or cat per household is allowed, although there are weight and breed restrictions for dogs. Smoking is allowed in apartments only. Newport Heights has its own community room; it also shares the Florence Gray Multipurpose Center located adjacent to the property. The Florence Gray center hosts many multicultural events for the residents of the North End of Newport. Built to replace aging public housing, Newport Heights is part of the City of Newport’s revitalization of the North End. That now thriving area includes a daycare, Community College (CCRI), a multipurpose Community Center which includes a Boys & Girls Club, MET School (Charter School), and a newly opened East Bay Community Action Health Clinic. It was once called Tonomy Hill, and it had a terrible reputation. But, it was transformed by Trinity Financial, beginning in 2002, into “a new ‘old-fashioned’ neighborhood,” as the New York Times put it.
