Details: The Thompson House, a HUD subsidized Independent Living Facility on the campus of New England Homes for the Deaf, is the first residential complex in the Northeast designed especially for Deaf and Deafblind seniors. Under the leadership of the New England Homes for the Deaf, the Thompson House was conceived to promote independence and accessibility for the deaf. The 21,000 square foot structure accommodates 24 one bed-room units, including three handicap-accessible apartments. An American Sign Language fluent Property Manager is onsite several days each week. Residents enjoy spacious, open-plan apartments equipped with state-of-the-art communication systems. Seating alcoves conveniently located in common areas encourage neighborly interaction, while a small library of reading and Braille materials and closed-captioned videos helps alleviate isolation. In addition, a large, sunny community room with an adjacent kitchen provides an inviting space for holiday parties and social gatherings.Safety features installed in each apartment include: flashing and vibrating smoke alarms, telephones and doorbells: bed shakers and vibrating beepers alert the Deaf/Blind resident to a visitor, a phone call or emergency. Closed-circuit television in the lobby helps identify guests and provides a more secure building. The Thompson House has received numerous design awards from “The National Council on Senior Housing”; “The National Association of Home Builders”; and, “The Society for the Advancement of Gerontological Environments.
