Property Description:
The Esther and Sam Schwartz Building, also known as Miriam Apartments II, provides progressive and advanced solutions to housing for the elderly. Located on the campus of Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute, the Esther & Sam Schwartz Building consists of 150, one-bedroom apartments with 28 units specially adapted to make them accessible to persons with mobility impairments. Each apartment includes a fully-equipped kitchen. Each unit of the building is designed for the senior tenant, equipped with grab bars in the bathrooms and a call-bell for immediate response from the main office in the event of an emergency. Tenants at the Esther and Sam Schwartz Building enjoy the independence of their own home while also benefiting from the community atmosphere created by the many active gathering places. Whether enjoying a restaurant-style kosher dinner meal in the main dining hall or a casual kosher lunch at the grill in the coffee shop, there is ample opportunity to engage in social activities. In addition, the coffee shop is now open on Sundays to offer breakfast and/or lunch to the tenants which is made possible through a grant from the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey. The full-time nurse in the Esther and Sam Schwartz Building provides health care counseling and serves as the first response in emergency situations, while the service coordinator, who is a social worker, offers counseling and facilitates access to community services for the tenants. An activities director plans events and gatherings geared toward tenant interests. Whether enjoying a classical music recital on the baby grand piano in the lounge, horticultural activities in the greenhouse, viewing a movie in the multi media center in the Adeline & Harold Kramer Auditorium or taking a trip to an Atlantic City casino, tenants enjoy a wide range of structured activities. In addition, the shopping bus regularly transports participating tenants to the local markets and shopping mall. Tenants form their own groups as well and will schedule regular games of mahjong or bridge while enjoying the expansive view from the top floor lounge. The Morris Feld Memorial Library provides ample reading materials for the book-lover with many titles in large print while a neighborhood network provides access to the internet and email for the technically inclined. The Mary & Sam Adler Coffee and Gift Shop on the ground floor stocks many day-to-day foods and toiletries for those items forgotten during the weekly shopping trips to area supermarkets. Tenants may also take advantage of the services of a beautician in the fully-equipped beauty shop which is open weekly. The grounds of the Esther and Sam Schwartz Building offer beautiful outdoor spaces for tenants to enjoy. A greenhouse provides the perfect place for horticultural activities allowing seniors to pursue their love of plants and gardening. The Gertrude & Charles Cooperwasser Gazebo creates a beautiful outdoor meeting spot for tenants. Equipped with outdoor lighting and ceiling fans, the gazebo is the perfect setting, day or night, to enjoy the beautiful grounds. A Shabbat elevator allows observant Jews to move freely throughout the building on the Sabbath avoiding the need to use the stairs. Round the clock security, weekly maid and linen service and on-site laundry facilities are among the other available amenities. In addition, the clinical services of the skilled nursing facility are also available to tenants in the Esther and Sam Schwartz Building, including short-term rehabilitation, physical and occupational therapy and vision care. The Esther & Sam Schwartz Building participates in Section 8 of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (H.U.D.) thereby entitling qualified individuals aged 62 and over and/or persons with mobility impairments for federal subsidies through the HUD Section 8 program. The kosher meal program is sponsored by Daughters of Miriam Center and is mandatory under the agreement with HUD. The nursing, activity, housekeeping and linen services are optional. Utilities are not included in the rent.
