Property Description:
Members of Forest Hills Housing Cooperative don’t own their own unit; they own a share or shares in the whole property, which is the big difference between condominiums and cooperatives. But, as shareholders, they enjoy the tax benefits of home ownership. The members vote annually for a Board of Directors, which makes and oversees policies for the complex. Trinity Management follows those policies and makes sure that the financial and legal interests of the members are safeguarded. Forest Hills has 87 units of housing in Jamaica Plain, a 4.4 square mile neighborhood of Boston with a population of about 37,000 people. The history of this area is long and begins with the Puritans who wanted land to farm. It was once very popular with beer brewers, and interestingly is home now to the Boston Beer Company that brews Sam Adams beer. It had a nice brook (Stony Brook) and a big pond, Jamaica Pond. It eventually benefited from Frederick Law Olmsted’s vision of an Emerald Necklace of parks, and so is home to Olmsted Park, Jamaica Park, the Arnold Arboretum, and Franklin Park. The Forest Hills Housing Cooperative community is active, and the staff and Board keep members informed about free tax preparation, or programs for students in the community, job opportunities for young and old, local festivals and films, craft workshops, Bingo games, safety tips and history.
