Details: Columbus Colony consists of a 155 unit independent living facility and a 150 skilled care nursing home The Ohio School for the Deaf Alumni Association (OSDAA) was founded 1870 and opened the retirement center on December 12, 1896. Due to code restrictions on the old buildings, Columbus Colony Housing and Columbus Colony Elderly Care were built and opened in 1979. OSDAA owns and manages Columbus Colony. The independent living buildings consist of Columbus Colony Housing I, which opened in 1979 and Columbus Colony Housing II, which opened in 2001. Residents pay 30% of their annual adjusted income and all utilities are included. The Columbus Colony Housing buildings are attached allowing the residents to have access to both sides. The buildings have laundry rooms, library, craft room, dining room, interpreters, strobe light system, and vans for weekly trips to the store and field trips. Across the private drive is Columbus Colony Elderly Care, a skilled care nursing home, which was opened in 1979 with 100 beds and 50 more beds were added in 1995. Elderly Care accepts Medicare and Medicaid, and both Housing and Elderly Care have a deaf social worker/service coordinator and all staff members are required to learn sign language.
