Harriet Tubman Terrace
- Subsidized, Low-Rent Apartment (for Family)
Location: Poughkeepsie, NY - 12601 Contact Phone: (845) 473-2205 Details: The Harriet Tubman Terrace Apartments is the joint responsibility of members from two churches in Poughkeepsie, The Smith Metropolitan AME Zion Church on Smith Street, and the Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church on Route 376 which make up an independent non-profit board of directors. In 1970, housing task force committees from both churches came together to address the significant lack of affordable housing in the Hudson Valley area. Originally intended as a housing cooperative, the first board of directors had the vision of creating a way through stable housing in which low-income residents could be supported in their attempts to lift themselves out of poverty. An independent non-profit corporation was formed to receive F.H.A. insured financing and begin construction, AME Zion Trinity Housing Development Fund Corporation, Inc. Our team is made up of a board of directors of AME Zion Trinity HDFC, a management company contracted by the board, maintenance and leasing office staff as well as many local vendors and contractors. The apartment complex is made up of 200 apartment units in 20 separate townhouse-style buildings and is situated on a 9 ½ acre property in the City of Poughkeepsie. Walking distance from downtown where the Poughkeepsie Train Station is located, there is also convenient access to the Arterial (Route 44/55) and Route 9 with easily accessible bus routes nearby. Hosted onsite is the well-regarded and long-running after-school program: The Harriet Tubman Academic Skills Center (www.htasc.org). The Center hosts a 10-month academic skills program which operates between 3 and 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday. This dedicated group of staff and volunteers faithfully carries out the mission of improving the lives of children in the City of Poughkeepsie through academic support. |
