It precedes the Back Bay, which was created in the 1870s. It was originally home to the up and coming, but has seen its economics shift back and forth through the decades, attracting a mix of ethnicities. In 1973 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, Vadum writes, due largely because it is “the largest urban Victorian neighborhood in the country.” In 1983 it was named a Boston Landmark District.
